There is a great range of books and videos on all aspects of the course. All can be borrowed. Check them out.
Textiles- History and general works
5000 years of textiles. (Book) A magnificent reference book covering textiles in all countries of the world. It has a chapter on textile techniques and many colour illustrations.
The encyclopaedia of fashion. (Book) Who invented the bra? When were hipster pants first introduced? This A to Z of fashion provides information on all aspects of the subject.
The Thames and Hudson Dictionary of fashion and fashion designers. (Book) An up-to-date publication which contains not just designers but useful material on fashion, accessories and styles.
A century of fashion. (Book) This century has seen more changes in dress than in any previous century. Here is a survey that shows it all, from high fashion to ready-to-wear; in accessories; on the catwalk and on the street. Many illustrations.
The age of dissent. (Video 60m.) In the 1960s, revolutionary designers such as Courreges and Mary Quant transformed the look of fashion by taking their inspiration from what young people were wearing on the streets.
Parade: the story of fashion in Australia. (Book) Starts at the time of settlement and takes us through Victorian times to power dressing in the eighties and the work of such designers as Colette Dinnigan, Carla Zampatti and Akira Isogawa.
Levi's 501 jeans. (Video, 30m.) Traces the history of jeans from working men's clothes to the present day, and shows how the Levi Company used clever advertising to give them a young, cool image - and sell millions of pairs.
Stepping out: three centuries of shoes.(Book) The catalogue of the exhibition showing the Powerhouse's extraordinary collection of shoes, dating from the 1700s.
The Big Parade.(Video, 60m.) Four students from East Sydney Technical College prepare to show their clothes in front of a discerning and critical audience.
Construction and decoration of textiles
Sewing and knitting: a Reader's Digest step-by-step guide. (Book) This comprehensive work covers all the techniques and the stitches with many helpful hints along the way. The instructions are all illustrated and easy to follow. .
Needlecraft skills and techniques. (Book) Step-by-step instructions for embroidery, needlepoint, patchwork, applique, knitting, crochet as well as special techniques such as smocking and dyeing. .
How to sew. (Book) For beginners and more experienced sewers. This is a simple, practical guide which starts with fabrics and equipment and progresses to advanced techniques. Includes hand embroidery, making tassels and more.
Have you any wool? (Book) Shows how wool, combined with techniques such as crochet, patchwork and knitting can create exciting decorative effects.
The harmony guide to knitting stitches.(Book) Hundreds of different stitches, from the most basic to beautiful and intricate patterns.
A creative guide to patchwork and applique. (Book) Over 50 designs ranging from traditional quilts to contemporary applique designs for sweaters and shirts. The templates are included.
Every kind of patchwork. (Book) The whole range of patchwork techniques illustrated, with templates for the designs.
Fabric painting. (Book) Designed for the beginner, the projects illustrate just how versatile this technique can be.
Creative guide to painting on silk. (Book) An extensive coverage of this technique, including all the information needed to get started, and many stunning projects.
Batik (Book) An excellent introduction for the beginner, with easy-to-follow projects and useful information on the equipment and materials needed.
Decorating with beads. (Book) While many of the projects are for the home, the techniques can easily be adapted for fabrics.
Dyes and decoration. (Book) Looks at the different techniques and materials used to decorate fabric surfaces. A brief but useful overview.
Fashion by design. (Book) Covers all stages of clothing production, including design briefs, fabric choice, cutting and sequencing. Includes advanced pattern styling.
Costume
The costume designer's handbook. (Book) For both the amateur and the professional, with a good chapter on research into costume. Mainly black and white illustrations.
Costumes for the stage... a complete handbook for every kind of play. (Book) Drawings illustrate typical costumes of the major historical periods, including Greek drama, Shakespeare and the period before the first World war.
Designing and making stage costumes. (Book) A comprehensive work which takes the design process through from seeing the script and considerations of colour and fabric to stage properties and fitting the costume. Black & white illustrations.
Stage costume. (Book) Good colour illustrations and instructions for making a wide range of costumes from the basic shapes to pantomime, uniforms and underwear. Covers twentieth century dress in considerable detail.
The Textile design book. (Book) Hundreds of examples of stripes, borders and patterns together with a section on colour and colour exercises.
Looking for ideas. (DVD,Video, 15m.) Shows students working on costumes for a musical and making a pair of jeans.
Clothing. (DVD, Video, 20m.) Designers discuss the design process, the source of their ideas, and pattern making.
Fashion design drawing and presentation.(Book) Many line drawings to show how to draw the body and different types of clothing, with chapters on fashion illustration and different techniques of layout and presentation.
Children's fashion illustration. (Book) Detailed instructions on drawing a wide variety of children's clothes, with notations as to colours, materials used and any special techniques.
Other cultures - textile arts and costume
Ethnic dress. (Book) A great source for folk costumes from almost every country. All the costumes are shown in colour photographs, with maps to locate their areas.
Rapt in colour: Korean textiles and costumes of the Choson Dynasty. (Book) This was the period from B.C.67 - A.D. 668. The full page colour photos of the textiles and the costumes show how advanced this civilisation was in textile arts.
Textile arts, multicultural traditions. (Book) Covers embroidery, applique, tie dyeing and batik, with detailed instructions on techniques, and the countries where they are used.
Beyond the silk road: the arts of Central Asia. (Book) An account of the history and lifestyles of the nomads and oasis dwellers and their clothes and textiles, such as bed covers, coats, caps, and wall hangings.
Arts and crafts of Thailand. (Book) While showing non-textile crafts such as pottery and woodcarving it has good chapters on Thai textiles, and the masks, headdresses and costumes of Thai theatre.
Chinese dress, 1700s to 1990s. (Book) Explores changes in Chinese culture and the impact that these changes have exerted on dress design. The focus is on urban dress in major population centres such as Peking and Hong Kong.
The book of Kimono. (Book) Everything you need to know about kimonos. How to choose the fabric, make it up and wear it, as well as understanding the etiquette and history of this garment.
Design and inspirational resources
Fashion and surrealism. (Book) An unusual and fascinating book, which outlines, with many illustrations, the love affair between fashion and the art movement known as Surrealism.
Erte's theatrical costumes in full colour. (Book) Exotic designs from the Russian born designer who worked mainly in the first half of this century. He used flowing lines and a wide range of colours to create different moods.
The costume maker's art: cloaks of fantasy, masks of revelation. (Book) Over 250 colour photos of extraordinary costumes by different designers. Futuristic or fantastic, these designs will stimulate your imagination.
The Material world. (DVD, Video, 60m.) Designers use fabric to create their own distinctive clothes -Lacroix uses handwoven prints, Miyake pleats sythetic fabric.
Dressing up. (Book) This brief overview covers a lot of ground - rock stars, film costumes, dance costumes, fancy dress and making a mask.
From studio to stage: costumes and designs form the Russian Ballet. (Book) Costumes, jewellery, headdresses and accessories from the great period of the Russian Ballet's productions in Paris, about 1907 to 1933. Designer's drawing are also included.
Costume design: techniques of modern masters. (Book) Hundreds of coloured illustrations of costumes designed for the stage by designers at the top of their profession. Includes designs for film, television, ballet and opera.
Absolutely Mardi Gras. (Book) The colourful and outrageous costumes from the Sydney Mardi Gras. Showcases the work of different designers and goes behind the scenes to show how the floats and props are created.
Fantasy. (DVD, Video, 60m.) Shows how some designers have incorporated elements of fantasy into their clothes and accessories, giving rise to some remarkable clothes.
Fibrearts design, book three. (Book) A showcase of contemporary work done in such areas as tapestry, feltmaking, woven wearables and fibre sculpture.
Fibrearts design, book four. (Book) Covers tapestry, quilts and wearables. Shows work in two and three dimensions and in mixed media.
A material world: fibre, colour and pattern. (Book) The catalogue of an exhibition on textiles at the Powerhouse Museum. The examples are taken from all over the world, and feature embroidery, dyeing, batik, applique and more.
Wearable art: design for the body. (Book) Based on the work of the finalists in the New Zealand Wearable Art Awards, this book contains many colour photos of the costumes, created in different materials by these talented designers.
Fashion DesignersThe lace-maker: an Australian in Paris. (DVD, Video, 60m.) Colette Dinnigan's first Paris show, where she uses lace in exciting and innovative ways.
Red or dead: the good,the bad and the ugly. (Book) Originating in a London market stall in the early eighties, this label has won many admirers with its aim of making non-elitist and challenging fashion.
Vivienne Westwood. (DVD, Video, 60m.) This influential designer has graduated from Punk in the 1970s to the catwalks of Paris in the 1990s, but her clothes are sometimes outrageous and confronting.
Diesel. (Book) The design label that has been successful on a global scale. Unconventional methods and 90's "style surfing" have been responsible for its wide appeal.
Issey Miyake: making things. (Book) A lavishly illustrated overview of the work of the brilliant Japanese designer who has a unique way of using fabrics.
Issay Miyake moves. (DVD, Video, 60m.) Shows how Miyake creates his ground-breaking designs and his unusual fabric effects.
Mambo: still life with franchise. (Book) The company who began with T-shirts and board shorts has carved out for itself a special place in the fashion world. Many colour illustrations.
Rebellion (DVD, Video, 60m) Designers who changed the history of fashion in the 20th century. Includes the work of Chanel, Poirot, Quant, St Laurent and others.
Design identifiably Australian? (DVD, Video, 30m.) Australian designers Jenny Kee and Linda Jackson talk about their work and we are shown examples of Australian jewellery, knitwear and textiles.
