Agriculture can be studied at Sydney Distance Education High School in Years 9-10 and 11-12. Junior Agriculture is an exciting and flexible course. It appeals to students who have a special interest in caring for animals and plants and who are interested in the natural environment.The course is suited to students regardless of whether they live in the city or the country. The activities, projects and lesson materials can be adapted to meet students' needs and circumstances. Students have the opportunity to build on their skills in problem solving research, planning and communication. The course covers all aspects of plant and animal production and marketing. There is a special emphasis on practical, "hands on" activities. Some of the activities in which students may choose to participate include:
![]() Stage 6 Agriculture examines in detail the production and marketing of plant and animal products with special emphasis on environmentally sustainable practices. Students have the opportunity to study in detail a farm and a farm product of their choice. Other practical activities include laboratory experiments, small plot work and excursions to commercial farms and related industries, interview with experts and investigative research. A comparative growth study of chickens or ducks is a highlight of the Preliminary course. The course aims to develop strong skills in effective research, experimentation, problem solving and communication. Students will develop knowledge and understanding in the physical, chemical, biological and socio-economic aspects of Agriculture with a focus ranging from the family farm through to the international market. Agriculture Stage 6 provides pathways to employment in rural and related industries as well as entry into further education in the agricultural sciences. |
