Legaldate: This is a legal magazine for students. Each issue has two or more major articles on current legal issues and includes student activities. If you need information about a topic, ask us and we will find you something.
The Bulletin: (Magazine, published weekly) A current affairs magazine covering news, business and the arts. Has useful articles from time to time.
The Law Handbook: your practical guide to the law in N.S.W. 7th ed., 1999: Published by the Redfern legal Centre, and a very useful reference.
Excel Preliminary Legal Studies. (Book 319p., 2000) This is the textbook being used for the course. The library copy is available only for a four week loan.

Law and Society

Is justice for all? (video 52m.) Discusses with young offenders the reasons why they broke the law. Also looks at what young Australian know and understand of their civil rights.
Civil Rights (Booklet, 40p.) Includes articles on Bill of Rights, privacy issues, Freedom of Information legislation and free speech. Mainly Australian material.
Human rights. (Booklet, 40p., 1993) A compilation of articles on three topics: the Vienna Conference on Human Rights; Australia and Human Rights and Human Rights in Asia.
Human Rights in Australian law. (Book, 366p., 1998) A comprehensive survey which records the growing impact of international human rights law on Australian law.
Human Rights. (Booklet, 24p., 1998) A good explanation of the subject in layman's language with an Australian focus. Includes case studies and international treaties.

Focus Study: Crime and the Law

Crime and Justice. (Issues in Society, 44p, 2001,.) Takes up a number of current issues, including DNA testing, electronic crime, sentencing and detention. Juvenile Justice (Booklet 24p., 1999) Looks at this topic in relation to young Aborigines, women and people of ethnic background. Also considers parental responsibility, police powers, and diversonary schemes. Written in clear and simple English
Private violence, rendered justice (Pamphlet, Alternative Law Journal, 1999) A discussion of two cases of lethal assault - a battered wife assaulted her husband and was found guilty of murder, and a man lethally assaulted his brother-in-law and was acquitted on the grounds of self defence.
Battered wife syndrome and the role of lawyers. (Pamphlet, Law Institute Journal, 1998) The way the battered wife syndrome is treated in Australian law with reference to actual cases and the role of lawyers involved in these cases.
Medical negligence. (Video. 15m., 2001) The many aspects of this complex issue and the current state of the law in Australia.
DNA testing. (Video, 15m., 2001) The case for and against compulsory DNA testing, and variations in the law in different states. Some successful cases.
DNA Testing and criminal justice (Parliamentary Briefing Paper, 2000) An overview of the debate to extend police powers in NSW to take compulsory samples for DNA testing.
E-Law (Hot Topics, 2001) looks at how the law has responded to changes in technology, and the implications for privacy, copyright law and property law. Includes discussion of the current law in these and other areas.

Additional Focus Study: Consumer Law

Choice. Magazine of the Consumers' Association of Australia. This is a useful resource for this topic. We can send you any relevant articles.
Implications of the Glendale appeal (Pamphlet, Australian Product Liability Reporter, 1999) A consumer purchased a container of caustic soda but failed to follow the instructions and suffered severe burns. A landmark case which went to the Federal Court.
Oysters: natural, kilpatrick or hepatitis (Pamphlet, 1999) A summary of a recent Federal Court case where a group of consumers who contracted hepatitis claimed damages from the local council and the oyster farm.
Consumer protection. (Pamphlet ACCC, 1997) A plain language summary of the consumer protection provisions of the Trade Practices Act plus some case studies.
Small Claims Tribunal (Video, 18m.) Follows the case of a consumer making a case to the Tribunal. It shows the Tribunal in action. The case is finally settled.
Consumer Credit (Kit, comprising an article, a booklet and two brochures, 1996) Looks at the scope of the consumer credit code, and provides information about a range of topics, including leases, mortgages, unfair contracts, fees and charges and advertising.
Contract law. (Video, 40m.) Shows the five elements of a contract using animation. An excellent introduction.

Additional Focus Study: Workplace Law

Workplace safety (Video, 15m. 2001) Looks at the responsibilities of the employer and possible outcomes when safety regulations and laws are broken.
Unfair dismissal. (Pamphlet, Employment Law Update, 1999) Seven recent cases of unfair dismissal are outlined and briefly discussed.
Workplace bullying and violence: it's not okay. (Pamphlet, Employment Law Update, 1999) Discusses a recent case in which bullying and violence occurred, and notes that under OHS legislation a safe workplace is one that includes freedom from abuse.
Harassment into the new millenium (Pamphlet, Equal Opportunity Update, 1999) Defines new types of harassment complaints that are emerging, including flamemail, cyberloafing and offensive screensavers.
"Authorising " sexual harassment: employer liability (Pamphlet, Law Society Journal, 1999) A brief analysis of a recent case which explored the responsibility of employers to prevent sexual harassment.

Part-time work and indirect discrimination (Pamphlet Alternative Law Journal, 1996) Discusses the availability of part-time work and the need to make the labour market more responsive to the needs of women with family responsibilities.
Opinion: the Workplace Relations Act, one year on; also unfair dismissals under the Workplace Relations Act. (Pamphlet) From the legal Services Bulletin, 1998.
Hot topics: Industrial relations. (1997) A kit comprising a booklet, a brochure and photocopied material. Includes an overview of state and federal legislation.
The Workplace Relations Act, 1996 (Video, 1 hr approx.) Speakers discuss all aspects of the legislation, including unfair dismissal.
An employees' guide to unfair dismissal (Booklet, 72p.) Published by the Redfern Legal Centre, this is a helpful plain English guide with explanations of the legal terms and copies of the forms.
Discrimination. (Hot Topics, 1998) A useful overview, looking at the sources of discrimination, Federal and State laws and recent developments in areas such as age discrimination and racial vilification.

Additional Focus study: Family Law

Domestic Violence (Hot Topics, 1998) Includes material on the changing role of women in family and society, attitudes towards violence, the links between inequality and violence.
D.I.Y. Law: private lives - family court. (Video, 30m., 2002) Looks at some of the problems arising from one or more parties not being legally represented, using as an example a mother representing herself in a child custody case.
Family Court. (Video, 15m., 2001) Looks at issues surrounding the family court.
News from the family Court. (Pamphlet, 1997) The 1996 reforms to the children's provisions of the Family Law Act, and the implications of some important cases.
Legislating for same sex couples. (Pamphlet, 1999) Discusses how same sex families now have the same property rights as hetrosexual couples.
B and B: Family Law Reform Act. (Pamphlet, 1997) Discusses a recent decision of the Family Court permitting a former wife to move from Cairns to Bendigo with her two children.
Re Evelyn: surrogacy, custody and the Family Court. (Pamphlet, 1998) The significance of Australia's first surrogacy decision.
