Aboriginal Studies

Sydney Distance Education High School acknowledges the Cadigal clan of the Eora Nation as being the traditional owners of land upon which this institution stands.

About Aboriginal Studies
The Sydney Distance Education High School offers Aboriginal Studies in Years 11 and 12.

Rationale
Aboriginal Studies:

  • enables students to think critically about the historical and contemporary experiences of Aboriginal peoples
  • develops understanding and appreciation of the concepts of social justice and shared histories
  • enables students to detect and analyse bias
  • develops analytical skills, the ability to pursue independent research and the ability to develop coherent arguments
All students are encouraged to take an active role in the process of reconciliation.

The preliminary Course includes 4 parts:
  • Part 1 - Aboriginality and the Land
  • Part 2 - Heritage and Identity
  • Part 3 - Colonialism, Racism and Prejudice
  • Part 4 - Research and Inquiry Methods
In Year 11 students will undertake three case studies, one of which is a comparative study of the local indigenous community or their own indigenous community AND the Lardil people. The same local community must be used in all three parts.

The HSC Course consists of 3 parts:
  • Part 1 - Social Justice and Human Rights issues
  • Part 2 - Heritage and Identity
  • Part 3 - Research and Inquiry methods, Major Project
In Year 12, the Lardil Aborigines of Mornington Island and the Tiwi people will be studied as national Aboriginal case studies and the Maoris and and the Three Affiliated Tribes in the USA are used for the Global Indigenous study.

There will be a comparative study of Health and Criminal Justice.
