Pre-contact to 1960s

Examinable outcomes

Part I
Aboriginality and the Land (30% of course time and assessment)

  • Aboriginal peoples' relationship to land and water

  • Dispossession and dislocation of Aboriginal peoples from land

  • Impact of British colonisation on land and water

Comparative Case Study:

A case study is an indepth study of a specific community focussed on a particular topic and limited by knowledge content requirements of the syllabus. The Comparative Case Study is an indepth study of at least two communities limited by the knowledge content requirements of the syllabus.

Aboriginality and the land will be dealt with through a comparative study of a local and a national indigenous Australian community.

A local indigenous community may be substituted with your own indigenous community.

The National Indigenous Australian community studied at SDEHS is the Lardil community.

Note well: You must study the same local community/ies in all four parts and a National Indigenous Australian Community

Remember to be courteous and considerate when consulting with

  • the original people of the area

  • the indigenous people who are members of the local community

  • Indigenous organisations in your local area.


Part II
Heritage and Identity (25% of course time and assessment)

  • The Dreaming and cultural ownership

  • Impact of colonisation an Aboriginal cultures and families

  • Diversity of Aboriginal cultural and social life

Case Study:
The Case Study is to be completed on the Local indigenous Community or your own indigenous community.

Part III
Colonialism, Racism and Prejudice (25% of Course time and assessment)

  • Aboriginal political and legal systems

  • Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal responses to British colonisation

  • Impact and consequences of dispossession and dislocation of Aboriginal peoples

Case Study:
The Case Study will be completed on the Local indigenous Community or your own indigenous community.

Part IV
Research and Inquiry Methods (20% of Course time and assessment)

  • Processing information

  • Communication information

  • Participating in community consultation
