War and Peace

Introduction

Participating students, parents and teachers - 24 May 2002

It was a dark and gloomy morning on the 24 May, 2002, but even the threat of rain did not deter historians from Sydney Distance Education High School exploring memorials to War and Peace in the heart of Sydney. The day was significant for many reasons. It was:
  • Empire Day
  • Queen Victoria's birthday
  • the day of Alex Campbell's funeral (he was the last surviving ANZAC of Gallipoli)
  • the day when over 2,000 primary Catholic school students attended a Mass at St Mary's Cathedral
We welcome students who were unable to attend the excursion and invite all visitors to our site to spend some time on this virtual excursion: looking at the photos and reading the information about memorials to various wars waged and various efforts made for peace in Australia.
