1. JERICHO

Essay: Explain how the excavations carried out at Jericho by Kathleen Kenyon and her team revolutionised the ideas held by pre-historians about Neolithic society.

When planning this essay response do the following:

  1. Revise Part 2 Jericho, pages 8-10 and 13-14.
  2. Note the definition of "Explain": relate cause and effect/ make relationships between things evident/ provide why and or how?
  3. Draw-up a list of points
    1. for the traditional view of Neolithic Jericho and
    2. of the way that Kenyon's work changed this view
  4. Write-out three to four brief quotations from the leaflet notes, which you could use as evidence for your arguments.
  5. Use what you have written in 2 and 3 (above) to fill-in the scaffold.
  6. With this scaffold as a guide and using the relevant information and evidence you have collected, write your essay response (two, A4 pages) to the question.

Here is a sample Introduction for this essay:

Kathleen Kenyon, an archaeologist from the British School of Archaeology, and her team, studied the site of Jericho in 1952. The discoveries made during Kenyon's excavations contradicted previous archaeological assumptions, and shed new light on the technologies and societies of the Neolithic period c 7000-5000 B.C.
