John Roote Andrews

John Roote Andrews was the local stonemason who is credited with carving 90 per cent of the headstones in the cemetery. The family tomb - altar-like monument with a canopy - was carved in 1864 and is of such unusual style - with Scottish and medieval features - that it is probably unique in Australia.

The names of family members with the stories of their lives and the dates of their deaths are carved on the shields around the base of the tomb. JRA's descendants include TJ Andrews, the funeral director in Newtown.
