Here is a sample Introduction for this essay:

Both Athens and Sparta made significant contributions to the defence of Greece during the invasion of Xerxes (and its continuance under Mardonius) in 480-479 B.C. The Athenians were largely responsible, under Themistocles, for promoting unity among the Greek states and for the naval defence / successes (due to Themistocles' strategies) at Artemisium and Salamis respectively. The Spartans, however, inspired the Greeks as a whole with the brave (if futile) defence of Thermopylae by Leonidas. It was the Spartans under Pausanias who were chiefly responsible for the Greek victory at Plataea. Themistocles shared responsibility for the defeat of Persia at Mycale, while Athens won the final victory at Sestos.
