PRELIMINARY AND H.S.C.

Exposition (essay) Scaffold

Introduction

  • Statement of position taken on the topic
  • Indication of arguments
  • Don't simply repeat the wording of the question

First Argument

  • Argument
  • Elaboration (discussion of argument). This includes any evidence you have to support your argument (with acknowledgment of the author)
  • Include evidence from relevant sources through paraphrases, or brief quotations.

Second Argument

  • Argument
  • Elaboration (as above)

Third Argument

  • Argument
  • Elaboration

Fourth Argument

  • Argument
  • Elaboration

Conclusion

  • Restates the position on the question
  • Sums up the arguments raised.

Simple Explanation of the scaffold:

Introduction - This is my opinion of the question
Main Body of Essay - These are my arguments for that opinion
Conclusion - This is what I have shown regarding my opinion using the sources.


The Most Commonly Used "Directive Terms" in Ancient History

Account for: state reasons for
Account of: narrate a series of events or decisions
Assess: make a judgement of value, quality, outcomes, results or size
Describe: provide characteristics and features
Discuss: identify issues and provide points for, and /or against
Evaluate: make a judgement based on criteria / determine the value of
Explain: relate cause and effect/ make relationships between things evident / provide why and or how?
Outline: Sketch in general terms; indicate the main features of
