| Introduction | In ancient times, great civilisations grew up along the
valleys of rivers. Some of these were the Nile in Egypt, the Euphrates
and Tigris in Mesopotamia and the Hwang ho and Yangtse Kiang in China.
In this unit you'll be looking at the Indus River Valley civilisation that lasted between 3000 and 1500 BC in the Indian sub-continent. Discovery of this civilisation is fairly recent. Though there were a few finds in the late 1800s, it was only in the 1920s that serious work began. The finds have been exciting for archaeologists, historians and scholars who are intrigued that over 5000 years ago there were settlements in India where people had sophisticated engineering skills, were trading their goods with people in other countries and enjoying a comfortable lifestyle. You can now be a part of the study of this ancient civilisation, trying to piece together the story of a people from what has been discovered so far. Why is it important for us to learn about the Ancient Indus River Valley civilisation? Sure, their culture disappeared a long time ago, but their achievements, millenia before the kind of technology we have today, are stunning. By discovering how they lived and worked we can learn more about the history of human beings on earth. In this unit of work you will examine the sources that have been unearthed. You will view the artifacts and buildings and consider the theories offered by scholars and archaeologists about the way the people lived. While it would be good to plan a trip to Pakistan and India to see and touch the real things, we'll have to be content with a virtual experience. Start by looking at some of the sites that have been discovered so far. |
