Exercise and Sport

Asian countries dominate the world of martial arts and archery and have done for many years. This is due largely to the sporting cultures and traditions of the area. In the last 20 years, however, sport in Asia has developed a great deal. They now rank among the world powers in many sporting disciplines, including swimming, athletics, alpine skiing, gymnastics, diving badminton, hockey and table tennis. This owes much to the fact that Asia has been edposed to global sport on an unprecendented level, whereby previously they had led an isolated existence with traditional western sports not encouraged. This development has not evolved without controversy, however. For example the Chinese swimming team of the 90s had its problems, with drug scandals dominating the media headlines at many international events.

Sport in Asia is on a crescendo at present and let's hope, for all the right reasons. Given that Asia is now competing in various traditional western sports and embracing coaching and training techniques from afar, the future looks very bright on the world stage.

Asian countries have also devised forms of exercise which are gaining a lot of popularity now in the western world. The benefits of yoga and Tai Chi which enhance strength, balance and flexibility by uniting mind and body cannot be underestimated. Many sports stars do yoga stretches to contribute positively to their fitness. Yoga also has the added dimension of meditation which enhances body fitness with peace of mind.
